Is Coffee Your Favorite Rx?

I love coffee.  I am always excited to have my next cup and often plan my day around it. People ask me how much I drink and if I worry about the potential health risks associated with caffeine.  I thought I would share some insight into these questions.

If you read my book you will know that coffee has competed to be the major love of my life since my teenage years. It is more than a beverage to me, it is in my blood.  I have discovered both physical and intrinsic benefits throughout our relationship.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, and the health benefits have often been controversial. More recently there have been many articles sharing research on this subject. I will first discuss the health benefits which are many.

Caffeine is a stimulant that can help increase mental alertness and physical performance.  The caffeine in coffee has antioxidant  properties and can help fight free radicals in the body thereby reducing the risk of some diseases.

According to a study by WebMD coffee is associated with reducing the risk of certain cancers, Type 2 diabetes, as well as preventing Alzheimers and Parkinsons Disease.  On the flip side coffee according to the Cleveland Clinic coffee may cause some risk to those with certain medical issues and pregnancy if not taken in moderation.  It is important to understand your personal health situation and tolerance levels.

In addition to the physical aspects of caffeine, there are many mental health benefits associated with drinking coffee.  Coffee is a very social drink and can be a way to meet and connect with colleagues, friends and new business associates.  Going back to ancient times, historically coffee houses have been places where people meet to share and discuss ideas.

In my book, Coffee Connections: Finding Common Ground Through My Daily Brew I describe how coffee gatherings provide tools to learn and build new relationships.  These meetings create opportunities to build commonality and connections before delving into a project or a more committed relationship.  A cup of coffee may be an inexpensive entry point to a future longer-term relationship.   Who knows what you may learn over a shared cup?

Coffee is my security blanket.  I enjoy it whether I am alone, walking my dog, or meeting with friends.  With a cup in hand or while in line it is always easy to strike up a conversation with those nearby.  Are you ready to start making coffee connections?  If local to Cape Cod always feel free to reach out to me.
